Solar power accounted for 5.16 billion kWh, while wind energy contributed 4.74 billion kWh
Turkey generated a record 9.9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from solar and wind power in August, according to the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry.
Solar power accounted for 5.16 billion kWh, while wind energy contributed 4.74 billion kWh, the ministry said. The sources represented 14.1% and 12.9% of total electricity generation, respectively.
Turkey generated 36.71 billion kWh of electricity in August, with hydropower remaining the largest source at 9.08 billion kWh, or 24.7% of the total.
Renewable energy sources accounted for 56.4% of electricity generation, producing 20.7 billion kWh. Domestic sources supplied 69.7%, or 25.58 billion kWh, the story said.
Daily electricity generation also reached its highest level of the year on Aug. 13, at 1.24 million megawatt-hours.
Solar and wind power generation sets records
From January through August, hydropower generation reached 75.2 billion kWh, while wind and solar production totaled 30.4 billion kWh and 29.8 billion kWh, respectively. All three figures were the highest for the corresponding period since 2000, the ministry noted. (By the way I have a story here about Turkey’s energy generation)
Domestic energy sources generated 181.8 billion kWh during the eight-month period, accounting for 73.2% of total electricity production. Both the volume and share were records for the period since 2000, the story underlined.
Renewable sources supplied 149.8 billion kWh, representing 60.3% of total generation — also the highest volume and share for the period since 2000.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said long-term investments in renewable energy infrastructure were contributing to record production levels.
Türkiye aims to meet rising energy demand while developing a sustainable energy system and reducing its dependence on foreign resources, Bayraktar said.
He added that the country would continue integrating its solar and wind potential into the electricity grid through advanced technologies as it pursues energy independence.
