YouTube accounts for more than 40% of internet traffic in Türkiye: regulator

YouTube represented 40.6% of total internet traffic in Q1’26, well ahead of Instagram, which ranked second with 16%

YouTube remained the most-used online platform in Türkiye during the first quarter of the year, accounting for more than 40% of the country’s internet traffic as video streaming continued to dominate online activity, according to the data from the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK).

Data compiled from the regulator’s quarterly report showed that YouTube represented 40.6% of total internet traffic between January and March, well ahead of Instagram, which ranked second with 16%. (I have a story here about Instagram in Turkey)

The figures indicate that video consumption continues to drive internet usage in Türkiye, with streaming and social media platforms attracting the largest share of online activity.

YouTube followed by Instagram, TikTok and Netflix

Within the streaming category, YouTube accounted for 57.4% of traffic, followed by Instagram at 17.4%, TikTok at 5.6%, and Netflix at 5.5%.

Instagram led internet-based messaging traffic with a 58.5% share, ahead of Facebook Messenger at 26.4%. WhatsApp accounted for 7.3%, while Telegram represented 6.2%.

For internet voice communications, WhatsApp remained the dominant platform, generating 61.2% of total Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) traffic.

Online gaming traffic was more evenly distributed. PlayStation ranked first with 25.4%, followed by Steam with 24.1%, PUBG with 9.2%, and League of Legends with 6.7%, the report noted.
