The study reveals that 40% of Turkish users read news via Instagram

A growing number of people in Türkiye are turning to Instagram for their news, according to the Digital News Report 2025 published by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. The study reveals that 40% of Turkish users read news via Instagram, making it the leading social media platform for news in the country. (I have a story here about the blockage of Instagram in Turkey)

The report also provides a breakdown of news consumption rates across six major platforms in Türkiye (%)

  • Instagram: 40 (2024: 38)
  • YouTube: 35 (2024: 38)
  • WhatsApp: 23 (2024: 29)
  • X (formerly Twitter): 23 (2024: 22)
  • Facebook: 22 (2024: 27)
  • TikTok: 11 (2024: 10)

While Instagram, X, and TikTok saw gains in their share of news consumption, WhatsApp experienced the steepest drop at 6%.. Facebook and YouTube also saw decreases of 5 and 3 points, respectively.

What is the methodology of the survey?

The study highlights that 36% of Turkish users share news via social media, messaging apps, or e-mail. Furthermore, internet remains the most popular medium for accessing news in Türkiye, with 72% of respondents indicating it as their primary source. This is followed by television (56%), social media (46%), and print media (16%). Other platforms include news podcasts (6%) and AI chatbots (8%).

In addition to consumption habits, the report also covers topics such as the most trusted news sources, preferred news outlets across TV, print, and online platforms, and the devices used for reading news.

The Digital News Report 2025 was conducted by YouGov through an online survey between January and February 2025. The global survey included around 100,000 participants across 48 countries, including 2,002 respondents from Türkiye. The research was supported by the Google News Initiative.
